Newsletter: December 2014

Merry Christmas

On behalf of the Palmerston North Cat Club committee I would like to wish all the members of the club a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

You may notice that this December newsletter is a bit of a bumper issue - there were so many things to add I gave up trying to figure out which could be held over until January and just put everything in! I know it goes on for pages and pages and that we're all busy at this time of year, but perhaps you can leave it in your inbox and read it one quiet afternoon once the rush is over.

2015 Show Judges: Anne Harvey (FCCQ & ACF, Australia)

Anne was a latecomer to the Cat Fancy, beginning in 1999 when she bought her first pedigree kitten, a Maine Coon. Prior to that, she had shared her home with a number of domestic cats who wandered into her home looking for a place to curl up in comfort and who ended up sharing their lives with her for many years.

That first Maine Coon kitten changed Anne's life and she spent the next 15 or so years concentrating on breeding beautiful Maine Coons, placing emphasis on quality, temperament and health. Anne was one of the first breeders to introduce Maine Coons into Queensland with cats imported from the USA. She also worked with a few local breeders who have become close friends over the years.

While Anne enjoyed showing cats, and enjoyed success at many shows, she counts the friendships she has made on this journey as the most important thing she has gained from the Cat Fancy.

After commencing her judges training in 2006, Anne learned to appreciate the qualities of breeds other than Maine Coons. With many weekends now spent away from home, Anne decided that it was time to retire from breeding in 2013. That first Maine Coon kitten is now an old-timer, and has to share her with a few other Maine Coon retirees.

Anne supports and promotes the cat fancy in Queensland and to that end she has held a number of executive positions in clubs and councils over the years. She currently serves on the executive of the Feline Control Council of Queensland and is the Secretary of the FCCQ Judges Guild. When not judging Anne also assists with and manages shows.

Outside the world of cats, Anne works as an Engineering Technician with a large international Civil Engineering Consultancy. She enjoys photography, reading, travel and spending time with friends and family as well as her cats. Anne lives with her husband Peter in a large house overlooking the ocean in Hervey Bay, a few hours' drive north of Brisbane.

End-of-Year Get-together

Those who gathered at the Gorge Cafe had an enjoyable time - nice food, great company - and were able to meet with one of our new club members, Miria Busby, as well as getting to meet some of the 'other halves' we don't often catch up with.

It's hard to believe that we needed no prompting to put on the silly hats!

Joining the Committee

The AGM is coming up in February and the club needs willing members to join the committee as several people will be standing down this time.

There are monthly meetings (and very few manage to get to all of these over a year) and more work in the first part of the year which peaks with our show on the first Sunday in May. It's not a huge workload for most of the year and the more people on the committee the less any one person has to do.

If you would be willing to serve on our committee for the 2015/16 year please advise the secretary and, if possible, come along to the AGM.

2015 Show Judges: Donna Fuller (CFA, USA)

Acquired first pedigreed cat in 1971, a Russian Blue neuter, and added a breeding quality Russian Blue female a year later. Registered my cattery name, TSAR BLU, in 1973. I have bred and/or shown Russian Blues to CFA National Awards many times.

Acquired first Persian (a blue-cream) in 1977 and showed her to 18th Best Cat Nationally in 1979. Bred Persians in solid-, parti-, and bi-colour divisions and Exotics in solid and parti-colour. Acquired a Birman female from Australia in 2001 and have produced a CFA Grand Champion and Regional Winner.

Entered the CFA judging program in 1985 as a shorthair specialty judge; advanced to all breed judge in 1989. Have judged in every region of CFA (including Japan) plus the International Division. Have guest judged for other associations in Australia and New Zealand.

Have been active in numerous cat clubs since 1973 and have held every major office and show committee position. Was a founding member of the San Francisco Revelers cat club which held one of the premier shows in CFA in the 1990s; have been Treasurer of that club for many years. Was treasurer of CFA's International shows for several years and served as Treasurer of CFA from 1996 to 2000.

In 'noncat' life, I'm a Certified Public Accountant. After six years with a public accounting firm as an auditor, I spent 19 years in senior financial management positions with the major utility company in Northern California. As a result of an attractive downsizing package offered in 1993, my current occupation is occasional consulting and doing special financial projects for large companies in the San Francisco area plus devoting much more time to CFA work and general cat fancy activities. I'm also an avid needlepointer and have entered a few competitions with my work as well as covering my walls and furniture with my works.

How Much?

- Fund-raising - Barbeques
Thanks to the initiative and organisation of the Holden family (Paul, Brittany, and Noah) and their helpers Sheryl Sinclair and Emma Kimberley, the three recent barbeques netted the club just under $300.

- Advertising & Taxis
A couple of small show expenses: $57.50 for advertising in Flash Cats and $40.53 for the taxis to move the judges around town or to-and-from the airport when the committee members are flat out with other things.

2015 Show Judges: Janice Davey (NZCF, New Zealand)

I'm a cat lover from way back. In 1987, with my husband John, we started breeding Birmans under the prefix LEEGRGO. Then we went on to breed Tabby Birman with the prefix BIRPUR.

I have been a member of the Birman Cat Club since 1987; I also belong to the Sacred Temple Cat Club of New Zealand and have held position of Club President, Secretary and Show Secretary.

Also Vice chairperson of the NZCF and hold the portfolio position of Shows which is a very busy and enjoyable position.

I am an all breeds judge and a longhair tutor judge, I have had a number of overseas judging assignments and I really enjoy the judging scene.

2016 Cats Calendar

Cor! Didn't we just do the club's fund-raising calendar? Well, yes. But we are really, really hoping to get the 2016 one done in time to offer it for sale at the show in May. Which means we can't waste a moment!

So, yet again we are seeking twelve 'page sponsors' who have great photos of their cat(s) and are willing to put a mere $20 into the fund-raising coffers. In return their photos will be placed on a 'month' page along with a small amount of text (the breed, the cattery, one form of contact). Pet owners and show families with $20 and great photos are also welcome as sponsors.

Please get in touch as soon as possible if you are interested in sponsoring a page in the 2016 calendar.

History Notes

- 1963 - Shorthair and All Breed Kitten Show

Here's the first page of the catalogue for the Shorthair and All Breed Kitten show that the club held in February 1963. Some names might be familiar to current club members and from an historical point of view the mention of the two life members was a great find.

I suspect from the final statement that the show managers were already having trouble with exhibitors trying to leave early!
