Bryan Surgenor

We were very saddened to hear of the death of long-time club member and former club president Bryan Surgenor on 8th September.

Bryan had a long association with the cat fancy and was proud that the 'Kendrick' prefix he applied for in the 1950s was still in use.  Best known for breeding British Shorthair Bryan started out with Persians and Siamese but after a break found his perfect match in the 'British'.

When asked about his personal breeding aims (Flash Cats, 3Q 2008) he said that his contribution to improving the breed was made by 'starting off new breeders on the right track'.

For over a decade starting in 1985 Bryan was the president of the Palmerston North Cat Club and at the AGM on 5th May 1998 he was made a life member.  At the time of his death he was the club's patron.

Our condolences are extended to his family and his many friends in the cat fancy.

(On behalf of the club, the committee made a donation to the Arohanui Hospice in lieu of flowers.)

Committee Meeting – 9th September 2014

Remember last month we included this in the committee meeting report?

Anybody is welcome to come along to the committee meetings!  If you plan to attend it would be great to advise us just in case we need to let you know about a last-minute change in plans.

It was prophetic, as it turned out.  McDonalds had double-booked the meeting room and we had to decamp to down the road to Rumour Has It Cafe at 305 Rangitikei Street.  The cafe is closed at this time of night but as they were setting up for the next day they were kind enough to let us use their tables and chairs for our meeting.  So we did have to scramble around letting committee members and likely visitors know about the change of venue.

So, again, we'd love to have any club members join us for the meeting, but please do let us know you intend to come along just in case the meeting has another nomadic moment!

- 2015 Show
The list of judges has been finalised, with a New Zealand and an American judge confirmed.  The others will be contacted to check availability and willingness to join us for the 2015 show.  We have a new contact for our judge-sharing arrangement with the Australian Birman clubs.

Quotes for various rosette sponsorships are being obtained, including for the owner of BAM winners.

The 2015 show web page will be started and the theme for the show will be the 'Best of British' in honour of the late Bryan Surgenor.

- General
There was no notable general business.

- Next Meeting: Tuesday, 14th October 2014
-- Time:7.00pm
-- Location: Rumour Has It Cafe, 305 Rangitikei St, Palmerston North

 How Much?

- Snuggle Sacks
If you keep a track of all the things we ask for in the newsletters you may remember back in July 2013 we asked for donations of fabric as Judy James had kindly offered to make cat sleep sacks that the club could sell for fund-raising.  By October these were on sale on Trade Me and have been selling there and at shows since then.

Total profit from snuggle sack sales: $465.03

Kerry Holden has taken on the job of keeping these listed on Trade Me and you can find the club's Trade Me listings though this link.

New Member

The club welcomes our new associate member, Madeleine Gray.  First up I would like to point out that being an associate member doesn't mean you won't be 'encouraged' to join the committee.  It is only a matter of time!

2015 Cats Calendars

After all the requests for sponsorship and then all the delays, finally the club's 2015 fund-raising calendar has been produced.  As we're starting our sales a little later than last year we have started out with a limited print run of 30 calendars.

The calendars cost $15 each and if you would like to purchase one (or more!) you can deposit your payment into the club account 02-0630-0172405-000.  Please include your surname as a reference when making your payment and follow it up with an email to let us know you've made payment.  We'll arrange a convenient drop off/pick up time from there.

For our out-of-town members, we are happy to post calendars out if required.

History Notes

- 1988 - Show Catalogue: President's Message
Not all history is ancient history and some of the hardest pieces of the club's history to track down have been items from the 1980s.  The 1988 show catalogue is one of the things I do have on-hand and in it is a message from Bryan Surgenor, the club president.  Perhaps some of you will see some names or events mentioned in it that you remember.
